Seeing a fire truck outside an early learning centre would usually cause alarm, but not this time. This fire engine had the kids at The Vines ELC in Henderson bursting with excitement. It was here at the Vines ELC just to visit them.

Our firefighters visit the Vines ELC

Our local fire service came to spend time with our tamariki who were absolutely thrilled. They were lucky enough to be able to explore the fire truck, learn about fire safety, meet the brave firefighters, and learn about their important work and how they support our community. The officers took the time to open up the various compartments in the truck, explain how everything works, demonstrate the different-sized hoses and show the children their special breathing apparatus, hats and fireproof clothing. The children watched, fascinated, as the firefighters put on their gear as they would before going to a house fire. And of course, the flashing lights and sirens and being able to sit in the fire engine were enormous highlights.

A huge thank you to the fire crew for making this day so special

The firefighters were really accommodating and listened intently to the children’s excited questions and comments, which was lovely. The smiles, shrieks and giggles said it all. We are exceptionally grateful for all the hard work these firefighters do to help our community.

Growing the future

Emergency vehicles are a massive interest for many of our tamariki. A team of firefighters visiting an ELC like the Vines and bringing this interest to life is hugely rewarding for our staff as well as the children. We may even have some future firefighters amongst us.

This event was a real hit

Our tamariki were thrilled to meet the firefighters, learn about their work, and check out the big fire truck. This was a fantastic opportunity to teach the children about fire safety and how to care for themselves and others when faced with dangerous situations. It was also a wonderful way for the children to learn about some of the help available within their community and how to access it.

Community visits to The Vines

Community support groups, such as firefighters, visiting an ELC help children develop a sense of belonging. They also help shape an understanding of what it means to be part of a community. The visit from our brave firefighters is one of many experiences available as part of our experiential learning programme.
